Generate, develop and communicate design ideas and processes for audiences using appropriate technical terms and graphical representation techniques (ACTDEP025)

Examine how people in design and technologies

occupations address competing considerations, including sustainability in the design of products, services, and environments for current and future use (ACTDEK019)

(ACARA, 2015)

The innov8 design project focuses on the two content descriptions from the Australian Curriculum: Technologies:

The project also encompasses broader curriculum goals including:

Incorporation of the following General Capabilities:

  • Literacy
-> developing writing skills and comprehending written tasks

  • Numeracy
-> visualising 2D and 3D shapes and size estimation

  • ICT capabilities
-> email operations and online form submissions

  • Critical and creative thinking
-> critically analysing design features and using       creative thinking to re-design

  • Ethical understanding
-> reason and make ethical decisions when designing

Inclusion of the following Cross-Curriculum Priorities:

  • Sustainability
-> Using prior and recently developed knowledge of Sustainability to make informed decisions when considering design features.

Consideration of the year 5 and 6 achievement standard for Design and Technologies:

  • Students describe competing considerations in the design of products, taking into account sustainability.

  • Students create designed solutions suitable for identified needs or opportunities.

  • Students use sustainability considerations to evaluate their ideas and designed solutions.

  • Students record project plans including production processes.

(ACARA, 2015)

Opportunities for differentiation within the project include:

  • Students are able to work at their own pace

  • Teacher guidance where needed

  • Verbal support for visually impaired or students with delayed processing

  • Use of a step-by-step guide (tabs on the webpage) and an assignment template to scaffold student learning

Extension activities for 'fast finishers' may include:

  • Develop a name for your new design

  • Create an instruction manual / procedural text to guide someone in creating your new design

  • Design a digital advertisement for your new design

Project Overview

This resource has been designed for the use of year five and six students in the key learning area of Technology. The aim of the innov8 design project is to demonstrate their knowledge of sustainability and design techniques to redesign a product and enhance its functionality and level of sustainability. By this stage, students should have a vast knowledge base in these areas and should be able to complete this task with limited assistance.
